Aiways U6 SUV-Coupé impresses on the long haul

The Aiways U6 SUV-Coupé combines impressive design with advanced technology to deliver class-leading range and an exhilarating driving experience. At the ED1000 rally last weekend, it scored points for its low fuel consumption even at high average speeds.

“Efficiency is the key to success,” explains Dr. Alexander Klose, Executive Vice President Overseas Operations at Aiways. “With our new Aiways U6 SUV-Coupé, we have placed the greatest possible emphasis on optimal energy utilization. Be it in our newly developed AI-PT powertrain, intelligent thermal management or aerodynamically sophisticated design.”

Technically innovative design with a sporty appearance

With its dynamic, muscular appearance, however, the lifestyle SUV goes one step further. Here, form no longer simply follows function, but works in perfect harmony. With a drag coefficient of just 0.248, the Aiways U6 SUV-Coupé is at the top of its class. In addition to the streamlined, closed shark front, the side air deflectors and the concave body recesses on the flanks, the rear design also actively works on low drag. The gently sloping tailgate and the tear-off edge ensure low turbulence and even generate aerodynamic downforce at higher speeds.

High-speed synchronous machine provides weight and efficiency benefits

At the heart of the Aiways U6 SUV-Coupé is the new 160 kW (218 hp) AI-PT electric motor. The permanent magnet synchronous electric motor was designed as a high-speed motor and can turn up to 16,000 rpm. This value is a good 25 percent higher than the competition and brings many advantages due to the wide usable speed range. For one thing, the motor can be smaller and lighter because it uses less magnetically active material.

“The intensive development work on our AI-PT has paid off,” Zeeshan Shaikh, Head of Aiways Technical Center Munich, is pleased to report. “Not only is it lighter and less resource-intensive, it is also stronger and better integrated into the overall vehicle system. This is particularly evident in the efficiency of the machine.”

Optimum temperature control of drive and interior thanks to heat pump

Optimized thermal management is another building block on the road to optimum energy utilization. For the AI-PT, this is handled by a new heat exchanger that not only cools the engine, but above all makes optimum use of its waste heat. In this way, the heat energy released by the engine is not discharged unused into the environment, but used to heat the interior or to condition the battery pack.

The Aiways U6 SUV-Coupé uses a highly efficient heat pump to control the temperature of the interior. This takes a large proportion of the thermal energy from the ambient air and is therefore significantly more economical than conventional electric auxiliary heaters. As in the U5 SUV, the Aiways app can be used to precondition the interior on request; this works both with the charging cable plugged in and without a mains connection. In combination with the PUMP app, the high-voltage battery can also be preconditioned for the first time. This not only helps with fast charging in extreme weather conditions. It also keeps the usable range more independent of the outside temperature and increases the battery’s service life.

Sensational participation in the ED1000 rally

Last weekend, an Aiways U6 SUV-Coupé started at the ED1000 rally. From Motorworld in Munich, it went via predetermined waypoints to Kempten, the Fernpass, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Upper Austria and via Regensburg back to Munich. With a short charging strategy, the U6 SUV-Coupé was only ever at the charging station for a short time in order to make the most of the charging performance with a high charging current, the Aiways team crossed the finish line as the second team – and that in a very competitive field of participants. With an average consumption of just 14.7 kWh/100km, the Aiways U6 SUV-Coupé impressed above all with its high average speed of just under 100 km/h in mixed country road and highway traffic in the Alps – even beating the cycle consumption value according to WLTP.
